France-based Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT) has signed a technical assistance and licensing agreement with Chinese shipbuilder Yangzijiang for the development of ships with GTT membrane technology.

Yangtze, which underwent its first verification procedure in March, has completed the GTT certification process.

A shipyard has won an order for four 8,000 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEU) dual fuel containerships from Pacific International Lines (PIL).

The liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel tanks on these vessels will be equipped with GTT’s membrane technology.

Each fuel tank will include Mark III membrane containment technology and other features that will help the vessel convert to ammonia fuel in the future.

The four ships are scheduled to be delivered in each quarter of 2025.

Philippe Berterottière, Chairman and CEO of GTT, said: The Yangtze team showed their determination by getting their license in record time.

“In a tight market, this new partnership will provide new shipbuilding capacity to meet current demand. We look forward to a long and successful cooperation with our new partners.”

In July, GTT received Approvals in Principle (AiPs) from DNV for its liquefied hydrogen (LH2) membrane containment system design and preliminary concept design for LH2 carriers.

AiP is part of an agreement signed with Shell in February to develop advanced technology for the transport of LH₂.
