Detroit – As ShotSpotter becomes more controversial, Detroit police are showing more enthusiasm for the technology.

On Sunday, a local man shot his brother four times. Police say ShotSpotter picked up the gunshot and alerted nearby officers.

The alarm reached the DPD before anyone called 911, and police arrived on the scene two minutes before someone told the dispatcher about the shooting.

As ShotSpotter pinpointed where the gunshot sounded, police saw the shooter fleeing the scene and helped the victim as soon as possible.

ShotSpotter is used by two police departments, and the Detroit Police Department wants a $7 million expansion of the program.

There is controversy about ShotSpotters. The sensors are designed to be triggered only by gunshots, but some consider sensitive sensors to be an invasion of privacy.
